Crazy Curls

It has taken me years to embrace my natural curls. I grew up not knowing anybody with hair like mine so it has taken me years to figure out how to do it. Thank goodness for the Internet. I wore my hair straight for a long time. It wasn't until I lived in Arizona that I started letting my natural curls out. I would sweat my straight hair out by the end of the day so I didn't really have a choice. It's been quite the transition, but I've wrapped my head around it (wink*) and decided that my curls suit me best. I'm following a more natural hair care regime ( for the most part) using more organic products. I've only been doing it for about a year, but I'm stickin to it. I will try to post growth, styles and products.

Big hair as a kid. No defined curls

Brushed out.
wild child

Color and heat damaged...dead. so depressing LOL
Don't mind my sunburned chest...My hair is pretty damaged here. Crispy to the touch!

Started using Organic products and Co-washing. Soft curls!

Straightened. Gettin some length!

First Braid-Out

2 french braids (slept with overnight after co-washing)

After taking out the braids

Ready to go...

Deep Conditioning Mask
So I've read that a deep conditioning mask is good to do monthly. On any hair really, but especially dry, heat-damaged, color-treated or natural hair. I scoured the internet for DIY recipes because last time I paid $100 at a salon and...i'm ballin on a budget these days so...I found quite a few different recipes, I decided to just go ahead and combine a lot of the recipes since they all seemed to have a lot of the same ingredients.

Lemon Juice, Honey, Olive Oil, Mayo, Coconut Oil, 2 egg yolks, Plain yogurt, 1/2 Avocado, Pureed Banana (Baby Food)
I think I did 3 tbsp of everything really.

My husband helped me :)
I made a big batch and blended it.
I used almost all of it because I have a lot of hair
and whatever was left over I stored in the fridge.

Afterwards I put a plastic bag on my head and wrapped my head in a scarf
(to create heat)
I left it on for about 5 hours. I read from 30 mins-8 hours so I went somewhere in the middle

VERDICT: Eh...I didn't see anything magical happen. My hair smelled kinda funky for a few days  and it was pretty frizzy the next day. Maybe combining all of the recipes was a bad idea. We will revisit this experiment again soon.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask

Thumbs: UP!
I love love love the way my hair felt when I got out of the shower. It was soft, I could comb right through it. Smelled good! It gave me big, soft, loose curls. Awesome stuff. I recommend!

Aussie Moist Conditioner

Thumbs: UP!
My hair is like the Sahara, and this is like much needed rain!
I love this! My hair is soft and easy to comb through.
I don't know how "organic" it is but it works...and that's all that matters to me.

Baking Soda

Thumbs: UP!
Ok, so this isn't necessarily a hair product, but it is multi-purpose.
I love to use it on my face. great exfoliate. Closes my pores. DO NOT get in your eyes though.
Also great for whitening your teeth.

Big Chop
So I decided to cut my hair. It was driving my crazy. Post-pregnancy hormones have wreaked havoc on my tresses. I was losing it by the handful. I was sick of fishing it out of the drain, so I just woke up one day and *snippety snip.* I cut off about 4-5 inches. It was almost to my butt, so that's quite a bit. Yes, I did it myself. I've had once professional haircut and it cost about $100. Never again. Besides I trust myself and if I mess up...it grows back!

Post hair-cut (still looks pretty long)

Doing my brother-in-law's dreads (My hair is about to my shoulders now)

A few months after my 5 inch chop. I love it. Looks and feels healthier

Ok, so i'm a few months into my natural hair care routine and although I chopped 5 inches off a few months ago...i'm almost back to my original length. I can't believe how fast its growing! I am happy with it. Got some highlights a few weeks ago so I've been deep conditioning and keeping it hydrated. I've never had very good luck with getting highlights because they always come out orangey or coppery when I'm going for caramel. They are still not exactly what I wanted but they're staying cuz i'm not trying to dye my hair again.

Shea Moisture Curling Souffle and Curl and Style Milk

Thumbs: UP!
It's an organic product line that i've used before. I've only used it a little but I really like the souffle. It adds definition to my curls and smells great. The milk I have only used once, but it tamed my frizzies and whispies. I've tried Shea Moisture before (Hair Smoothie) and was disappointed with the results, but I like these two products a lot better. You can get them at Walgreens or Target for $10.

Update:
Still loving my One N' Only Argan Oil from Sally's. You can get cheaper versions at Walmart or Walgreens I think, but I really like the strength of the smell of this line. I think this is why my hair is growing so fast. I have my mom using it now too and she loves it!

Curls Unleashed-Take Command Curl Defining Cream and
Curls Unleashed-Second Chance Curl Refresher
Thumbs: Up!
I stumbled across this product line at Walgreens and figured, what the hell.. and I'm in love.
I picked the the 2nd chance curl refresher first and omg. Heaven! Every curly girl is looking for that 2nd or 3rd day hair product that will spring their curls back to life. I really like this one. It tames the mane and with a lil spritz of water first, it can put some pep back into your curls step. I just barely picked up the Curl defining cream so I'll keep you updated on the results.

Caress-Evenly Gorgeous
Thumbs: Way way up!
I know this is not a hair product but, sometimes I've just gotta tell you about other stuff I love. I've been using this for a few years now and I love the way it exfoliates my skin and the smell. I'm not a big fan of body-wash because you just don't get that "clean" feeling that soap gives but this is amazing. It leaves you glowing. I will probably never buy another kind of body-wash, that's how much I love it!

Loreal-Youth Code Moisturizer and Dark Spot Serum
Thumbs: Uuuuuuuuuup!!!
Another non-hair product, but if you know me, you know I've battled acne since I was a teen. I had terrible, terrible blemishes. My adult years have been filled with trying to reach the point where I'm no longer self-conscious of my "naked" face and get rid of my blemishes. I have tried everything under the sun. Proactive, Velocity, Murad. Perfect for treating acne...but what about the blemishes? Well I saw a commercial for this stuff and ran out to find it. $20 a pop for like 1.6 oz. Well, I left once and was like skip that...but I ended up going back on a bad breakout week and picked it up. I've been using it for 3 months and the results are incredible. I haven't seen my skin like this in years. I highly highly recommend for anybody battling blemishes. I will shell out the $20 for this stuff because it has changed my face and my confidence immensely.

Me...with no makeup on!
